2.7 earthquake confirmed near Banff, no damage reported

Natural Resources Canada confirms an earthquake measuring 2.7 on the Richter scale rattled the region at 5:42 p.m.

It happened 4 km WSW of Banff, and 20 km WNW of Canmore.

There has been no reported damage to infrastructure.

Banff Mayor Karen Sorenson took to Twitter shortly after the quake.

“All is calm,” she wrote. “Interesting sensation but no damage.”

The last recorded earthquake in the Bow Valley was a 3.6 magnitude event 12 years ago, on July 28, 2002.

Natural Resources Canada staff is currently onsite evaluating the cause of the earthquake.
