Barbara McClatchie Andrews, photographer found dead in Yucatan, Mexico

The body of Barbara McClatchie Andrews, 74, who had been brutally strangled was found Friday morning Sept. 30 at km 14 of the Merida-Valladolid road near the shoulder.

A widely-traveled photographer and writer whose work had been published by National Geographic and several other publications, McClatchie Andrews was the owner and director of a non-profit gallery in Mérida called In La’kech, which she opened in 2007.

Its purpose has been to show the work of both emerging and established artists.

She had traveled extensively in developing countries, more than 50 according to biographical information on one of her websites, on whose culture she focused with her photography and writing.

McClatchie Andrews split her time between Mérida and Vancouver, Canada.

Authorities believe she was killed somewhere else about 12 to 14 hours before the body was found by a farmer at 7:30am on the Teya-Seyé stretch of the highway a few kilometers outside Mérida.
