A legal battle over the sanity of convicted terrorist Chiheb Esseghaier is set to stretch into the appeal phase after an Ontario judge appointed two lawyers to act in his case Wednesday.
Esseghaier, who was last year found guilty of plotting to plow up a VIA rail train in the Province is set to appeal his terror related conviction.
An inmate notice of appeal has been filed with the Ontario Court of Appeal which states that should have been judged by the rules of the Qur’an and not the criminal code.
Esseghaier, who refused a lawyer and represented himself whilst on trial, is deeply religious and consistently maintained his desire to be judged under the holy Islamic book.
Both he and his co accused Raed Jaser, who is also appealing his conviction, were found guilty on a total of eight terror related charges between them in March of 2015.
They were both sentenced to life in prison in September.
