A Vancouver dog walker, who first reported six dogs had been stolen from her vehicle but then said that the dogs died of heat exhaustion, pleaded guilty to two charges — animal cruelty and mischief.
Paulsen admitted the animals died of heat exhaustion, but first reported them stolen from her truck in a Langley dog park back in May. It prompted a huge search before the dogs remains were later found in a ditch in the Fraser Valley.
She pleaded guilty to a charge of not providing care in a way that could cause distress to an animal and also pleaded guilty to a count of mischief for lying to a peace officer about what happened to the dogs after the fact.
If the judge gives Paulsen the maximum sentence, she could spend two years behind bars, but one of the dog owners doubts that will happen. “She pleaded guilty to two of six charges, which right away makes you think that what she’s going to get for a sentence is going to be more of a slap on the wrist than anything. That’s a real slap in the face to all the families.”
The BC SPCA recommended the charges months ago after gathering enough evidence.
