Giant explosion kills one, injures neighbours in Mississauga

A massive explosion has leveled a home in Mississauga, Ontario leaving one person dead and several others injured.

Peel police confirmed one person was fatally injured, and nine others are injured. No information about the victim has been given, including where he or she was located at the time of death.

The home that exploded was levelled, and caused damage to a couple dozen other houses in the area. The cause of the explosion is not yet known.

About 50 firefighters, six units of paramedics and police officers are on scene.

Mississauga fire chief Tim Beckett told reporters crews would be working throughout the night to stabilize the site, including live wires and gas in the area.

“It’ll be a while yet before we even get into investigation mode and determine what a cause is,” he said. Police said it’s not clear if the explosion was the result of an accident or a deliberate act.

Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie said 50 to 100 residents have been evacuated from the area. Those who’ve been displaced can seek refuge at the Burnhamthorpe Community Centre. Crombie said 58 homes have had their gas and power shut off; she suggested residents who live there find friends or family to stay with at least overnight, but potentially longer.

Beckett said officials have set up a “broad perimeter” in part because of all the debris in the area.
