Justin Bourque : Suspect Arrested in Fatal Police Shootings

Justin Bourque, the suspect who is believed to have killed three police officers and injured two in the east coast Canadian province of New Brunswick on Wednesday, was arrested early on Friday, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, or RCMP, said.

RCMP in New Brunswick wrote on its Twitter account that Bourque was arrested just after midnight in Moncton, ending the massive manhunt for the 24-year-old man. The arrest came two days after he went on a shooting spree carrying two rifles and wearing camouflage clothes.

Police officials reportedly said that Bourque was spotted thrice on Thursday but was not arrested, and the motive in the shooting remains unclear.

The incident and ensuing chaos began Wednesday night after Bourque, wearing camouflage and carrying two rifles, opened fire, police said, leaving three dead and injuring two officers. While Bourque was at large, police shut down huge portions of Moncton, asking residents to stay indoors and leave their outdoor lights on.

One teen resident told the National Post that her family watched from their home in horror as the suspect came up behind an undercover officer and shot him dead.

“We banged on the windows. We told him, ‘Turn around, turn around, he’s there,’ ” Vanessa Bernatchez said. “He turned around and it was too late.”

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police in New Brunswick tweeted early Friday that a news conference would take place at 8 a.m. at the Crowne Plaza hotel in Moncton.

Moncton is a city of 70,000 less than 180 miles from the Maine border.
