Manitoba mom and daughter survive night in extreme temperatures after crash

Kristen Hiebert, 26, kept her daughter from freezing by holding her close for 10-12 hours Sunday night, after she drove her car off the highway, down a steep enbankment, and into a revine.

On Sunday night, Hiebert and her four-year-old daughter, Avery, spent up to 12 hours in a ditch in temperatures that dipped to -25 C. Hiebert tried to keep her daughter warm by covering her with her own body.

In the morning, Hiebert crawled up the embankment to the road for help, despite extensive injuries that included two broken arms. Eventually, a driver spotted Hiebert and stopped to help. Both Hiebert and her daughter were taken to hospital.

GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family. So far more than $16,000 has been raised.

In a posting on the page, Morgan Campbell called the generosity and kindness of donors “humbling.”

She said Hiebert “expressed tearful disbelief” when told of the outpouring of support.
