Murder charge laid in case of missing Kitchener woman : Police

Police say they are now investigating Kate Lynn Reid’s disappearance as a homicide, and a 61-year-old man has been charged with second degree murder.

With the assistance of Toronto Police Service, Hugh Rayburn McColl from Kitchener has been arrested and will be charged with second degree murder, according to Waterloo Regional Police.

Kate Lynn Reid, 51, was last seen Jan. 1 in the area of her residence on Burn Placein Kitchener. A local relative reported her missing to police on Jan. 27.

Police believe she was planning a trip to the Maritimes to visit family.

At the time, police were concerned for her well-being, as they had been told Reid has a history of addiction issues.

Last week, police received new information in the missing woman’s case and set up a command post in the area of Highland Road West and Belmont Avenue West, where Reid was sharing an apartment with a male roommate.

Officers canvassed the neighbourhood and surrounding areas for several days using special equipment and taking aerial photographs of the building in which she lives. They also searched the nearby Henry Strum Greenway, a storm water channel.
