Norman Gilbert Riel : Convicted murderer escapes from federal institution in Mission

Lower Mainland police are on the lookout for an inmate who went missing from Mission Institution Sunday afternoon.

41 year old Norman Gilbert Riel was confirmed missing from Mission Federal Institution located at 33737 on Dewdney Trunk Road, Mission.

Riel was last seen getting into a white Suburban as he fled the scene.

He has a criminal record which includes several convictions for robbery and firearms offences and was serving a sentence for a second degree murder conviction in 1998.

Police say the inmate has even been known to travel into the United States to avoid apprehension.
