Sarah Leung sentenced to five years for killing her babies

Sarah Leung has been sentenced to five years in prison for killing her newborn sons in 2009 and 2010.

Leung was sentenced in court in Vancouver on Tuesday to 18 months for killing one child and 42 months for killing the other, minus 50 days for time served.

Her sentence also requires her to report any time she becomes pregnant over the next 20 years.

Leung secretly disposed of her two newborns – once in April 2009 and again in March 2010 – after delivering the babies into the toilet at home where she lived with her parents.

Leung’s father found the body of the first baby boy wrapped in a plastic bag, resting against a neighbour’s house. The body of the second child, also a boy, has never been found.

Leung’s motivation was fear of her parents’ reaction to her pregnancies, the courts heard.

“She was afraid of being disowned by her parents, and since she was convinced she could not take care of the babies financially if she had to move away from her parents, she felt such fear and panic that her only thought was to get rid of the babies,” the ruling reads.

Calling the killings “inexplicable” and “abhorrent,” a judge sentenced Leung to 18 months for the first killing and 42 months for the second, with 50 days credit for time already served in custody. The sentences will be served consecutively.

Leung was charged with second-degree murder, but in April a jury convicted her on the reduced the charge of infanticide, believing her to be emotionally and mentally disturbed.”
