Three reported injured after collapse at Nova Scotia fish plant

CP-An emergency official says three workers were injured, one of them seriously, when the roof of a building under construction in southwestern Nova Scotia collapsed Thursday.

The men were putting a roof on a lobster storage tank, said Mike Swim, station chief at the Island and Barrington Passage Fire Department. Calls for help came at about 5:45 p.m. after the roof collapsed, trapping the three men.

“The trusses gave way and collapsed,” he said. “We were told there was one fellow trapped under the trusses in one corner of the building and two fellows in the other end of the building with minor injuries.”

His crews met EHS on the scene in Newellton on the Newellton Orion Wharf Road.

They cut the last man out of the mess. “He had serious, but non-life threatening injuries,” Swim said.

All three men are being treated at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital. RCMP and the Labour Board will be investigating the accident.
