Transgender woman wins $15000 after cops called her a man

The Vancouver Police Board must pay $15,000 to a transgender woman for discriminating against her, the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal has ruled.

Angela Dawson is well known as Rollergirl Vancouver.

She has alleged gender discrimination after numerous run ins with police.

Lindsay Lister is the lawyer for Dawson, and says while they’ve yet to hear from the board…

“We’re certainly optimistic that the Vancouver Police board will accept the decision, and implement the award that the tribunal has made and the decision, in particular, address the real void in policy and training that was identified.”

While six of Dawson’s complaints were tossed, the tribunal says she was discriminated against in custody in 2010.

Not only did police ignore her needs after gender reassignment surgery, officers insisted on using a male name and pronoun for her.

The tribunal has given the board a year to adopt policies that prevent discrimination against transgender people.
