Friday’s 20-vehicle pileup on Highway 401 in Whitby has claimed a fourth victim, a 10-year-old-boy, who police say has died of his injuries in hospital on Sunday.

Police confirm the boy is the brother of a 12-year-old who died shortly after the crash.

The Ontario Provincial Police were called to the scene of a massive collision on westbound Hwy. 401 east of Lake Ridge Rd. at 10:30 p.m. Friday involving 20 vehicles, including three transport trucks. One of the transport trucks failed to slow down while approaching a construction site and collided with the traffic in front of it.

Three people, a 12-year-old boy in one vehicle and a man and woman in another, were pronounced dead on scene. Sixteen others were taken to hospital, five with critical injuries.

The 10-year-old boy, the brother of the 12-year-old, died in hospital Sunday.

Four people are still in hospital, one of them still in critical condition.
Police have not released the names of the deceased.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call the Whitby OPP detachment at 905-668-3388.
