Actor Jim Carrey Responds To Second Wrongful Death Lawsuit

Jim Carrey has fired back in a lawsuit filed by the mother of his deceased ex-girlfriend Cathriona White, claiming that White’s mother considered taking her own life because she felt she was being blamed for her daughter’s suicide.

The actor shared his side of the story in court paperwork his legal team filed on Tuesday, October 18.

In case you missed it, White’s estranged husband Mark Burton also sued Carrey over White’s death. Burton, who married Irish native White in 2013 reportedly so she could stay in the U.S., filed his lawsuit last month, weeks before Sweetman filed her own suit. Both are being represented by the same lawyer, Michael Avenatti.

In the new documents, Carrey branded Sweetman’s lawsuit a “shakedown” which was “based on categorical lies concocted by Sweetman in collaboration with White’s ‘green card’ husband with whom White never lived as husband and wife, and whom she married only to avoid deportation to Ireland.”

Carrey went on to attack Sweetman, saying that she “abandoned her family during White’s childhood” and was “long estranged” from her daughter. She even left a “horrific and degrading” Facebook post on White’s birthday, which prompted people to vandalize her house and send her death threats after White killed herself.

Because of the bullying, Sweetman told Carrey in an email last year that she was “on the point of killing myself” and asked him to buy her a house. She became “angry and bitter” after the actor refused to do so.

Carrey also denied he gave White three STDs and prescription drugs. “White’s suicide, although tragic and devastating to Carrey, was her choice,” the document read. “The evidence is irrefutable that White sought out and stole Carrey’s prescription medication from his home and intentionally ingested large quantities for the sole purpose of ending her life.”

It didn’t take too long for Sweetman’s legal team to respond. Later on Tuesday, her lawyer Avenatti issued a statement that read, “Carrey and his ‘fixer’ lawyers are trying to deceive the media and the public. They are making up facts they know to be untrue in an effort to save Carrey’s career, which was over when he lied about not having STDs.”

Avenatti also asked Carrey to release the result of a 2013 STD test, which the lawyer believed Carrey took under the name “Jose Lopez.”
