Former World Wrestling Entertainment Joan Marie Laurer, known by her alter ego as Chyna, wrestler Chyna, has died at the age of 45 according to a report from the Los Angeles Times.

Law enforcement officials say they were notified by a friend who had not seen or heard from Chyna in a few days. After visiting her home, Chyna was found unresponsive in her bedroom. Police reportedly arrived at the scene at about 7:30pm.

The news of Chyna’s passing was later confirmed with a message on her site.

“It is with deep sadness to inform you that we lost a true icon, a real life superhero. Joanie Laurer aka Chyna, the 9th wonder of the world, has passed away,” her website reads.

WWE said it was “saddened” to learn of the death of a “wildly talented performer”.

Chyna began training as a professional wrestler in 1996 shortly after graduating from the University of Tampa. She soon became an icon within the wrestling world and famously teamed up with Triple H. Chyna was also the first woman to enter the Royal Rumble.

After her wrestling career, Chyna transitioned into Reality TV and appeared on “The Surreal Life” in 2005 as well as “Celebrity Rehab” in 2008 to help combat her lifelong addiction.

Tributes from across the wrestling industry paid tribute to the star after her death was confirmed.
