Game of Thrones to end after season eight; says HBO

Game Of Thrones will end after its eighth season, broadcaster HBO has announced.

The announcement was made this morning at HBO’s presentation during the TV Critics Association press tour in Los Angeles as HBO programming president Casey Bloys spoke to the assembled press.

“Yes, I think [showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff] have a very specific plan about the number of seasons they want to do,” Bloys revealed. “If I could get them to do more, I would take 10 seasons but we want to take their lead with what they could do and what the best version of the show is.”

As previously announced, the upcoming seventh season will be shortened to seven episodes, and will be delayed from its usual spring berth to instead debut in summer 2017, with the showrunners needing to wait for colder weather in order to accommodate the upcoming storylines (remember, winter is coming).

As for the eighth and final season, Bloys admitted they haven’t come up with a specific episode count yet, but revealed that plans for a potential spinoff are on the table, albeit up in the air at the moment.

“We’ve talked about it,” he said of a ‘GoT’ spinoff. “It’s not something I’m opposed to but it has to make sense creatively. I’m not sure the guys can wrap their heads around it when they are about to start production. We’re open to it; the guys aren’t opposed to it but there’s no concrete plans right now.”
