Katy Perry: ‘Pop Star’ wins round in bid to buy convent

Katy Perry must be losing a spot in heaven while singing “Roar” after she won a legal battle against a group of nuns on Wednesday about buying a convent owned by the church.

Katy Perry, who was a Christian rock singer before she was a pop star, wants to buy a convent. This was first reported last summer, but on Wednesday, Perry won a legal battle that brings her a step closer to acquiring the Los Angeles property.

Katy Perry has offered $14.5 million to buy an 8-acre hilltop property where the five remaining nuns of an order called the Sisters of the Most Holy and Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary continue to reside. The nuns attempted to sell the property to entrepreneur Dana Hollister, but a Los Angeles judge ruled yesterday that they did not have the right to do so, and that final discretion over the sale lies with Los Angeles’ Archbishop.

Variety reports that the Archbishop is on board with Perry’s purchase, even though Hollister has already started renovations on the property. The archdiocese has since sued Hollister, who hoped to turn the convent into a boutique resort.

It’s unclear what will come next in the sacred real estate saga, but ultimately, the Vatican will have the final say in any transaction.
