Kody Brown : ‘Sister Wives’ Star divorces wife No. 1 to marry wife No. 4

Kody Brown has traded his ‘official’ wife for the youngest of his four ‘spiritual’ brides. Kody appears to live in marital bliss with his four wives Meri, Janelle, Christine and Robyn and their 17 children on TLC’s show Sister Wives.

Here’s how that works: Because of laws banning polygamy, Kody can only be legally wed to one of his wives at a time. He married Meri in 1990, before meeting his three other wives, Robyn, Christine, and Janelle. The other marriages are spiritual, not legal.

But all that changed last September, Daily Mail reports. Kody has divorced Meri and tied the knot with Robyn, the youngest of the sister wives, so her children can have more security in the family. Robyn has three children from a previous marriage, and one biological child with Kody.

“We have chosen to legally restructure our family,” the Brown family said in a statement. “We made this decision together as a family. We are grateful to our family, friends and fans for all their love and support.” The family has 17 children in total.

Meri is apparently OK with all this, because she’s still with Kody, just as a spiritual wife. She is reportedly quite close with Robyn and encouraged Kody to court her.

But on the show, Meri has said that the whole plural marriage thing has taken its toll on her. She had to drop her career after the Browns went public with their family structure. “I’m happy on the good days and when Kody shows love and affection,” she said, “but on a bad day, I question my importance to the family and if Kody still cares about me.”
