Margot Robbie: ‘Actress’ Will Play Tonya Harding in New Biopic

Margot Robbie plans to bring figure skating pariah Tonya Harding to the big screen in an upcoming biopic.

The Suicide Squad actress is preparing to lace up her ice skates in preparation for perhaps her biggest role yet.

The casting announcement came today that 25-year-old Margot Robbie has signed on to play one of the most vilified sports figures in history, Tonya Harding, in the biopic I, Tonya.

In Tonya’s heyday, the then 21-year-old Olympian was at the very peak of her ice-skating career. As the favourite going into the 1994 winter Olympics, it seemed as if nothing could go wrong for the Oregon-born figure skater.

But one month before the games, fellow American skater and Tonya’s closest competitor, Nancy Kerrigan was suspiciously attacked by thugs hired by Tonya’s then-husband, Jeff Gillooly, to break her leg at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Detroit.

The attack led to no broken bones, but the severe bruising caused her to withdraw from the competition.

Tonya went on to win first place.

Six weeks later, with a strong knee and even stronger drive, Nancy took out the silver medal at the 1994 winter Olympics.

Distracted by the relentless media attention from the ongoing scandal, Tonya finished off the blocks in eighth place.

As the case unfolded throughout the year, the USFSA (United States Figure Skating Association) stripped the vilified sportsperson of her championship title, and awarded her a life ban after she plead guilty to conspiring to hinder prosecution in the attack.

Entertainment Weekly reports that the biopic will be written by Steven Rogers, the screenwriter of tearjerker P.S. I Love You and the Julia Roberts film, Stepmom.

There’s no word yet on Margot Robbie’s co-stars or I, Tonya’s director, but one thing’s for sure – it’s going to be juicy.
