Conjoined twins in critical condition, placed in intensive care in Augusta

A Georgia mother gave birth to conjoined twins Monday morning. They remain in critical condition on Wednesday.

Mom Brittany Crafton, 26, is listed in good condition, Georgia Regents said in a press release.

The twin boys, who share a heart and liver, were delivered by C-section and are in the neonatal intensive care unit at the Children’s Hospital of Georgia, which adjoins Georgia Regents, according to the release.

“What makes this case special is that the heart the twins share is quite normal and has been functioning very well for them,” Dr. Paul Browne, section chief of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Georgia Regents, said previously. “We believe it will continue to function well after the delivery.”

He said the twins’ chances of survival mostly depend on their heart.

“The news of them (the twins) being conjoined was truly surreal,” Crafton said before her delivery.

“I know God’s got me, and He’ll continue to be with me even after the twins are born,” she said. “This experience has helped me to look at ‘different’ people differently, and I have gained a real compassion for what they go through.”

Crafton’s are the first conjoined twins to be delivered at the Augusta medical center, according to the release.
