CPR Expectations and Reality, Report

An anesthesiologist is suggesting recommendations on how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR may need to be changed.

The National Post reports, while people have long been taught to do chest compressions and mouth to mouth, the procedure has been questioned in recent years.

In 2010, an international committee on resuscitation recommended skipping “rescue breathing”, and focusing on just the chest compressions.

A commentary in the Canadian Medical Association Journal now says that is a bad idea, especially for the untrained person.

Toronto Doctor Dr. Anthony Ho tells the paper, the act of tilting the head and chin back can help buy time the patient “desperately needs.”
