Darlene Mitchell : Woman Voices Concern Over Fathers Christmas Meal

A Regina woman says a Christmas Day meal her father was served at Regina’s Pioneer Village nursing home was unacceptable.

Darlene Mitchell was shocked to see the plate her father had in front of him—a plate that consisted of a piece of ham, a piece of bologna, watery macaroni salad and a bun.

“I don’t ever want to walk in and see senior citizens slumped over eating sandwich meat on Christmas Day. That’s what you’d give a dog.”

Mitchell says this isn’t the first time her father has been served a meal that her family would not consider nutritious.

“My mom has seen the meals and she has been vocal that they’re terrible and she’s not happy.”

Mitchell says she wants accountability for the government-run care home. She posted a picture of the meal on Facebook, which has been shared by over a thousand people.

“Once you know better, you do better so I’m hoping that someone who sees this maybe will say ‘hey that probably wasn’t a good meal so what could we do different?'”

Michael Redenbach with the Regina Qu’Appelle Health said Pioneer Village served a large turkey meal for lunch on December 25. He said it’s typical for care homes to serve a larger lunch and a lighter meal for supper.

“We have nutritional guidelines that we follow, we have registered dieticians that prepare our menu plans and we make sure that the nutritional needs of our residents are met,” said Redenbach.

NDP Deputy Leader Trent Wotherspoon said the cold supper of sandwich meat is not acceptable any day of the year.

“This meal served on any day for supper is not healthy, isn’t appropriate, isn’t dignified and it’s wrong,” said Wotherspoon.

    1. Well, maybe once a year, say on Christmas, bring dad a homecooked meal, you know, from home … instead of making the government do everything, every day.
