First case of bacteria in patient that’s resistant to all known antibiotics reported in ‘Pennsylvania’

The first case of a patient with an infection resistant to all known antibiotics has been reported in the US.

The Director of the CDC is calling Colistin Resistant E. Coli a nightmare bacteria and now it has reached the U.S.

Frieden said in a press conference “The Department of Defense released information about a woman with no travel outside of the U.S. who is the first documented human case in the United States of having a urinary tract infection, or any infection, with an organism resistant to every antibiotic.”

The infection, known as CRE, Is incredibly difficult to treat and can quickly become deadly.

One report suggests that as many as half the patients with this kind of infection will die.

The Director of the CDC says we can expect to see more superbugs in the near future.

He has warned doctors against overusing antibiotics and is urging scientists to develop new drugs quickly.

Dr. Joseph Bocchini, is a Pediatric infectious disease specialist at LSU Health Shreveport.

Bocchini said over-prescribing antibiotics has lead to more and more resistant strains. LSU Health Shreveport takes precautions to stop spreading resistant bacteria.

Bocchini said “[We] wash our hands, to glove gown mask, whatever is appropriate for the patient we’re taking care of to reduce the likelihood or spread of bacteria in general but specifically resistant organisms. The other thing that we do is when we know a patient is carrying a resistant organism that patient is isolated in the hospital to attempt to prevent that organism from being transmitted to others.”
