Mass. girl dies during mayonnaise lice treatment – ‘suffocated after plastic bag slipped over face’
Mayonnaise is used because it contains oil and vinegar or lemon juice, which are effective against head lice.
The plastic bag is used to contain the lice until they’re dead, but it needs to be tightly put on to avoid it slipping. Shower caps are also recommended for this reason.
Officers were called out to the family home in the city of Springfield, Massachusetts, USA on Saturday.
The matter remains under investigation and no charges have been filed.
The state Department of Children and Families is also investigating.
