Health Canada recalls allergy medication, Report

Health Canada is recalling two batches of epinephrine auto-injector products used in the treatment of serious allergic reactions in children.

Sanofi-aventis Canada Inc., in consultation with Health Canada, is recalling lots 2857508 and 2857505, of Allerject 0.15 mg/0.15 ml auto-injector following the discovery of a defect with the needle.

Devices with a faulty needle may not deliver enough epinephrine to stop a serious allergic reaction, which could pose serious health risks and even lead to death.

The affected lots of pre-filled, single-use injectors were distributed starting June 1, 2015; with a dosage strength intended for children weighing between 15-30 kilograms (33-66 lbs).

Health Canada advises parents and caregivers to check the lot numbers and return all affected product to their pharmacy for replacements.

People are asked to report any adverse events to Health Canada.
