Nature’s Touch recalls frozen fruit over Hep A concerns, Report

Nature’s Touch is recalling Organic Berry Cherry Blend due to possible Hepatitis A contamination.

The product has been sold exclusively at Costco warehouse locations in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador.

Consumers have reported suffering from illnesses after consuming this product. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued the recall after an investigation into a foodborne illness outbreak. The CFIA’s investigation is ongoing and their findings may lead to more recalls of other products. The CFIA advises contacting your doctor if you become ill after consuming this product.

If you discover this product in your home the CFIA recommends throwing it out or returning it to the store where it was purchased.

In the recall notice the CFIA says that food that is contaminated with Hepatitis A may not appear or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with this virus may cause hepatitis and produce a self-limited disease that does not result in chronic infection or chronic liver disease. Symptoms typically start 15 to 50 days after the contaminated food is consumed. These can include inflammation of the liver, fever, reduced appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle aches, and yellowing in the whites of the eyes and the skin.

The CFIA is verifying that industry is removing the recalled product from the marketplace.

The recalled product can be identified by the following label information:

Nature’s Touch brand Organic Berry Cherry Blend
1.5 kg (3.3 lb)
Best Before dates up to and including 2018 MR 15
UPC 8 73668 00179 1

Some people infected with Hepatitis A do not develop symptoms, but they can spread the infection to others.

Symptoms include:

fever
loss of appetite
stomach cramps
jaundice — yellowing of the skin and eyes
dark urine and fatigue.

The illness usually lasts one to two weeks. Although severe cases can last several months, most people recover without treatment.
