NBC Cameraman with Ebola arrives in US for treatment

An NBC news freelance cameraman originally from Providence, is expected to arrive in Nebraska for treatment Monday. The plane transporting 33-year-old Ashoka Mukpo has already touched down in Bangor, Maine for refueling.

Mukpo will begin the fight for his life at the Nebraska Medical Center.

He will be cured for by a team of forty plus doctors with the Biocontainment Unit there. The hospital has already cured Massachusetts doctor Rick Sacra of the virus, an encouraging sign for Mukpo.

“The facility here at the University of Nebraska Medical Center is a 10 bed facility that now has experience with an Ebola patient and has drilled for these issues for over a decade. So I think that given that we were chosen to e next up to accept a patient,” said Dr. Ali Khan of the NMC.

Mukpo caught the deadly Ebola virus while working as a free lance photographer in Liberia. His parents say their son was aware of the risks when he went over there. They are expected to join him in Nebraska.
