A 56-year-old woman is facing an assault charge after an incident at Santa Maria Senior Citizens Home in Regina.
On December 12 police started an investigation into an assault that is alleged to have happened on December 5th. Santa Maria care home announced on Dec. 13 that more than one of its employees were suspended for alleged neglect and assault. Executive director, John Kelly said a video of the alleged assault had been passed to police and a third party began an investigation.
Tessie Weigetz, who worked at the care home, will be in court on January 28.
Santa Maria has been under an external review by the province’s ombudsman after the story of Margaret Warholm was shared in question period last month. Warholm was a resident of Santa Maria from the fall of 2011 until she was taken to hospital in October 2013, where she died three days later. Her family said 74-year-old Warholm had bed sores, was malnourished and her spine had been fractured in several places.

Video cameras should be mandatory in all institutions across Canada ESPECIALLY in seniors homes. Elder abuse is going to get worse as we ask non professional front line workers to take on a very hard job especially for the boomers coming along. It’s time to stop the abuse and raise the standards for these warehouses.
