Unsanitary home-based Tattoo Shop Shut Down, Clients Told To Get Tested For HIV

Alberta Health Services is warning about possible infection for customers at a residential tattoo parlor in Calgary.

Discount Tattoo, located at 224 7A Street northeast, will be closed and anyone who received tattoos at the business or from its operator, Ryan Kinsella, should get tested for viruses due to unsanitary conditions.

According to AHS Medical Officer of Health Dr. Judy MacDonald, Discount did not have proper sterilization or sanitation processes in place, and customers could have been exposed to viruses including Hepatitis B and C, as well as HIV.

“We have no idea how many people might have used the services of this particular tattoo operator,” said MacDonald.

The closure was ordered back on January 28th and will remain in effect until Kinsella has addressed all concerns.

In 2013, AHS closed two shops, three were shut down in 2014 and none were closed in 2015. This is the first closure to date in 2016.
