This year’s winner of the Wildlife Photographer Of The Year Competition has been awarded to amateur photographer Don Gutoski for his incredible image ‘A tale of two foxes’ battling it out for survival in the subarctic climes of Cape Churchill, Canada.
Kathy Moran, National Geographic magazine’s senior editor for natural history projects, said that the image gives a powerful message about climate change.
“As it gets warmer in the Arctic and subArctic and the red fox can move further north into the territory occupied by the Arctic fox, you are going to get increasingly these kinds of tensions,” she said.
The second big prize was for Junior Wildlife Photographer of the Year, which went to 14-year-old Ondrej Pelánek from the Czech Republic for his image of Fighting Ruffs.
“This is a scene that many adult photographers have tried to capture, and Ondrej has really got it,” said Kathy Moran.
The shots have been chosen from a pool of more than 42,000 entries submitted by professional and amateurs from across 96 countries and span categories including Mammals, Underwater, Birds, Reptiles, Land, Urban Wildlife and Black & White.
The winning entries, along with those shortlisted, will be displayed at the Natural History Museum from Friday (October 16) until April 10 next year.
