A new British Columbia park will protect an ancient cedar forest believed to be the only inland temperate rainforest in the world.
The 11,190-hectare Class A provincial park, which will be known as Ancient Forest/Chun T’oh Wudujut Park, was established approximately 120 kilometres east of Prince George, near the community of Dome Creek.
The area makes up part of the only known inland temperate rainforest in the world and is home to some of the largest old-growth cedar trees in the province.
Several of the trees in the area are more than a thousand years old.
The province says the park designation will ensure the habitat will be excluded from timber harvesting and other commercial activity, keeping the trees intact for another millennium.
Officials will also be working with the federal government to consider this area for a UNESCO World Heritage Site nomination.
