Four rare white lion cubs born at Toronto Zoo

Days after it announced giant panda Er Shun is pregnant with twins, Toronto Zoo has officially welcomed four white lion cubs who were born on the weekend.

Makali, a four-year-old lion, gave birth to two cubs on Saturday and two cubs on Sunday, the Zoo said in a statement on Friday.

The next 30 days are critical. Makali and her cubs are currently in a maternity area of the lion habitat in the African Savanna area of the Zoo and are not visible to the public, the Zoo said. It is the first litter for Makali and Fintan, who is also four years old.

The Zoo announced Er Shun’s pregnancy on Wednesday. It is the first time in Canada a giant panda has been artificially inseminated, and, like the lion cubs, zoo staff will be watching these babies very closely.

The twins, if they survive, will live at the zoo for about two years and will likely return to China once they are weaned from Er Shun.

The pandas will be at the Toronto Zoo until 2018, when they’ll move to the Calgary Zoo for another five years.
