760 school zone speeders caught in September : Police

Saskatchewan Government Insurance highlighted school zone safety during September’s traffic safety focus. The result was police dolled out 760 tickets to motorists speeding in school zones.

According to SGI, law enforcement also issued the following during the month: 1,226 tickets for exceeding the speed limit; 425 tickets for improper or non-seatbelt use; 164 tickets for failing to stop at a red light/sign; 160 tickets for cellphone use while driving; and 71 impaired driving-related offences

Speeding in a school zone results in a fine of at least $190 under the Traffic Safety Act and three demerit points under SGI’s Safe Driver Recogntion program. According to a press release, SGI reminds motorists to slow down and stay alert in school zones. The safety of children depends on it.

September’s two-day Selective Traffic Enforcement Program event took place in Melfort on Sept. 17 and 18. Police officers from around the province assembled to enforce all traffic safety violations, with a particular focus on seatbelts, cellphones, aggressive driving and impaired driving.

They issued a total of 156 tickets, including: ?77 tickets for improper or non-seatbelt use; 27 tickets for aggressive driving/speeding; 13 tickets for cellphone use while driving; three tickets for speeding in a school zone; and 36 other tickets

To help ensure the proper use of child restraints and raise awareness about the importance of child passenger safety, SGI car seat technicians also participated in the STEP event. They checked 84 child restraints during the check stops and gave away nine car/booster seats.
