Honda Canada Recalls a Large Number of Odysseys

Honda Canada is recalling over 50,000 Odyssey minivans between the model years of 2011-2016.

Honda Canada explained today the problem stems from the mechanism that controls tilting and sliding in the van’s second row seats. Sometimes when the seats are tilted forward to allow access to the rows behind them they don’t lock back into place properly.

Honda is also recalling 634,000 Odyssey minivans in the United States for the same reason. In a recently released document the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the defect “increases the risk of injury to the seat occupant during a crash.”

So far, no crashes or injuries have been reported – in the United States or Canada – due to the defect, but the company has received hundreds of warranty claims.

Honda says it intends to install second-row seat slide springs and brackets in all the affected minivans, free of charge. However, the company says it can’t do that right away, due to the “large volume of new parts” needed for the repairs.

Owners of Odysseys from the 2011 to 2016 model year voluntary recall will be notified through mail in mid-February 2017 if they are affected by the recall. If they are affected, they will receive additional springs and brackets, free of charge, to fix the problem, according to the press release. However, the necessary parts to fix the issue will not be available until spring 2017, due to the large volume of new parts needed.
