A good book can change your life, but a couple of well-placed ones can save it, apparently. A Florida State University student says the books in his backpack stopped a bullet last night during the campus shooting, reports the Tallahassee Democrat.
Jason Derfuss said on Facebook the shooter, identified as Myron May, targeted him first and was standing only 5-feet away from him. Derfuss heard a shot behind him, but did not feel it hit him.
The student assumed he was not the intended target. Three hours later, Derfuss checked his bag and noticed a book he just checked out of the library stopped the bullet.
“I assumed I wasn’t a target. I assumed I was fine,” Derfuss wrote on Facebook. “The truth is I was almost killed tonight and God intervened.”
May, who graduated from Florida State University in 2005, opened fire in Strozier Library at 12:30 a.m. The library was filled with 300 to 400 students. Three students were injured in the attack, CNN reported.
