New Powerball Winner Marie Holmes who was one of three winners of a $564 million jackpot, says she plans to buy a new car and new home with the money.
In a news conference in Raleigh this afternoon, Holmes says she’s excited about what the future holds, but says this jackpot will not change her. Holmes says there were seven people living in her home and now they will be able to have their own place.
“I am humbled and grateful for the opportunities this has created for my family,” Holmes said.
Holmes opted for the $127 million lump sum payment. That means Holmes will take home almost $88 million after taxes. Holmes plans to donate to religious and charitable organizations, finish her college degree, buy her mother a house, and secure the future for her three daughters – and her seven year-old son who has cerebral palsy.
“I hope that this moment can shine a light on the challenges faced by children and adults with cerebral palsy,” Holmes said. “Not everyone understands what cerebral palsy is, and what it means to a family. I hope our story can help change that.”
In addition to helping her family, Holmes says she’s excited to use some of the money to travel.
Until recently, Holmes supported her four children by working jobs at Wal-Mart, Food Lion, KFC, McDonald’s and Subway.
