Seven shot in Indianapolis, Police

Seven people were injured, one critically, in a mass shooting in Broad Ripple early Saturday morning.

The shooting happened about 2:20 a.m. outside a shoe repair shop in the 700 block of Broad Ripple Avenue, between College and Carrollton avenues.

The victims, six men and one woman, ran into an alley between two banks across the street, trying to flee the gunfire.

One victim was treated and released at the scene. The critically injured man was being treated at St. Vincent Hospital.

Injuries to the other victims were not considered life-threatening, police said.

Several witness report a scene of chaos around 2:30 Saturday morning.

“I heard a lot of people run inside really quick and I ran out to see what was going on and then somebody said somebody started firing off shots so we walked around the corner to see what was going on and there were like people stampeding out and just fire trucks and ambulances in like 20 cops cars came just rushing in. It was pretty intense,” Bradley Knight told Eyewitness News.

He says people went running in multiple directions right after the shooting.

“It was definitely a scene of chaos. There was just people like panicking to get out of here,” Knight said.

It’s made him fear for his safety in the normally peaceful neighborhood.

“A gas station has been robbed right across the street from our house several times so it is hard just think about going out at night sometimes you never know what’s going to happen,” Knight said.

Those who live nearby are also on edge.

“It was shocking to see something like this happen out here,” said Broad Ripple resident Brendon Cammack.

He lives close to the crime scene.

“I did not see any suspects it was just like the streets were so crowded and the cops are definitely coming and taking care of the scene but it was chaotic out here. We live right behind the bars so it is scary to see something like this hit this close to home because you know the suspect could have run straight to where we live it’s just so close to us its scary,” Cammack said.

Residents hope police are able to quickly solve the case and that people will put the guns down.

“It’s just really scary because that’s a really large number of people especially when you’re just out in a place like Broad Ripple you feel safe and you’re out drinking with your friends you don’t want to have to worry about safety and walking around and people shooting you,” Andile Ndlovu said.

“It’s kind of hard because this is such a great place with so many opportunities and then these things happen and they kind of foreshadow what it could be and no one wants to be around that so its kinda hard to be optimistic when those kind of things happen,” Andrew Garnes said.
