Texas man fatally shoots himself while taking selfie “Video”

A 19-year-old Texas man is dead after police say he accidentally shot himself while posing for a selfie with a gun.

Deleon Alonso Smith died of a gunshot wound to the throat about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at an apartment in southwestern Houston. He was a father of two and about to start college on Wednesday, KPRC-TV reported.

Investigators say Smith had found a gun and was taking pictures of himself and a cousin holding the weapon and posting them to online when the gun discharged, killing Smith.

Police said that Smith thought the gun was unloaded.

“It’s the worst feeling in my life,” Eric Douglas, Smith’s uncle,” told KPRC-TV.

“It’s a numb feeling. It’s still unbelievable,” Smith’s grandmother, Alma Douglas, said. “Yesterday was my birthday and he came to wish me happy birthday, and now this kind of news.”

Investigators say the cousin was in another room when the gun fired.
