Five injured in Ottawa training exercise explosion

Five emergency responders injured Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. in a training accident in Kanata are expected to make a full recovery.

Two police officers and one paramedic suffered minor injuries and two paramedics were listed in serious but stable condition in intensive care at the General Campus of the Ottawa Hospital. They suffered burns from a blast and flames

“There were three paramedics also that were injured, two of them more serious than the third one,” says Ottawa Police Chief Charles Bordeleau.

“Their injuries are serious in nature, but I am told they will recover.”

Because the paramedics are considered civilians, the Special Investigations Unit has invoked its mandate. As a result, Bordeleau was unable to give specific details regarding the incident.

“What type of explosives, how it was detonated – I can’t comment on because that will be part of the Special Investigations Unit investigation.”

The exercise took place in an abandoned building in Kanata, a suburb west of Ottawa. Bordeleau says the five paramedics and officers injured were in close proximity to the detonation and gases that were released in the explosions.
