Police : driver caught going 170 km/h on Henday with toddler in back seat

The driver of a Mazda 3 pulled over after being clocked at 170 Km/hr in a 100 Km/hr zone on Anthony Henday Dr on Thursday morning has been charged with child endangerment.

Chad Orydzuk of the Edmonton Police Service says at around 7 a.m., EPS officers in an unmarked police vehicle were conducting traffic enforcement on Anthony Henday Dr near Yellowhead Trail when a Mazda 3 passed them at such a high speed that it shook their vehicle.

Police say the 38-year-old driver — who had a 37-year-old female in the passenger seat and a two-year-old male in the back seat — gave several excuses for his speeding, including “when you’re speeding you don’t realize how fast you are going.”

Finally, the driver said he “was being chased by another vehicle,” which was not witnessed by police nor reported to 911.

The man has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and child endangerment under the Criminal Code of Canada.

In 2014, 214 drivers have received mandatory court tickets issued for excessive speeding and over 19,000 drivers have been handed speeding tickets by EPS officers. In 2013, 369 mandatory court tickets and over 32,000 speeding tickets were issued.
