Soot found in the lungs of an East Jerusalem youth, whose funeral drew thousands on Friday, means the teenager was still alive and breathing when he was burned, according to the preliminary results of an autopsy.
The autopsy, carried out by Israeli doctors in Tel Aviv and attended by a Palestinian forensic expert, revealed that over 90 percent of the boy’s skin was burned and he suffered a head injury.
Many suspect the murder of Mohammed Abu Khudair, 16, was carried out by far-right leaning Jews seeking revenge for the kidnapping and murders of three Israeli teens last month, officials said.
Al-A’wewy said Saber Al-Aloul, the director of the Palestinian forensic institute, found soot in the boy’s respiratory canal, which indicates “the boy had inhaled this material while he was burnt alive.”
Khudair’s funeral was held on Friday with many Palestinians chanting “Intifada! Intifada!”, calling for an uprising against Israel, the New York Daily News reported.
A group of protestors threw stones at Israeli police, who responded with tear gas, rubber bullets and stun grenades.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the teen’s death “loathsome” and ordered investigators to work swiftly. Israeli authorities have said they are unsure whether Khudair was a victim of a hate crime.
