Fourteen years in the courts, interviews, affidavits, applications, and an intense shame over decades ended Monday after a Supreme Court justice finalized a $29 million settlement in the Nova Scotia Home for Colored Children case.
Justice Arthur LeBlanc formally approved the settlement between the province and former residents of the home, saying the deal represented an “important step” in the lengthy process.
An advertising campaign is planned across Canada to inform former residents of the settlement and encourage eligible claimants to come forward.
Those who allege they were abused have until Aug. 18 to opt out of the proposed settlement.
The Home for Colored Children opened in 1921 and operated for nearly seven decades.
