The RCMP is expected to announce criminal charges against suspended senator Mike Duffy at a news conference Thursday morning.
The Globe and Mail reported Duffy’s lawyer, Donald Bayne, said his client maintains his innocence and looks forward to a fair hearing in court – adding Duffy has never had a fair hearing in Senate, or the media.
Duffy has been under investigation for claiming living allowance and stating his home was in PEI – when he was alleged to be living in Ottawa.
The national paper also reported the investigation looked at Nigel Wright’s secret $90,000 payment after the scandal broke.
The Senate voted last fall to suspend the former Conservative senator as part of an ongoing controversy over disputed living expenses.
It’s not clear what charges Duffy will be facing but court filings in the past point towards fraud and breach-of-trust charges.
