Matthew de Grood : calgary mass murder suspect to appear in court

The young man charged in Calgary’s worst mass murder is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.

Matthew de Grood, 22, is charged with five counts of first-degree murder after a violent stabbing spree at a house party on Tuesday, April 15th.

De Grood was found fit to stand trial on May 22, but his lawyer, Allan Fay, said that being fit to stand trial doesn’t mean his client isn’t suffering from mental illness.

“Being fit to stand trial only means that he understands the process and can instruct counsel. You can still be very profoundly mentally ill and still be fit to stand trial,” Fay said.

A Crown prosecutor has been brought in from Edmonton because De Grood is the son of senior Calgary police officer.
