New Hampshire State Police and FBI have announced that Abigail Hernandez was safely reunited with her family Sunday evening.
Abigail Hernandez went missing on October 9, 2013 as she was leaving Kennett High School in Conway, New Hampshire.
The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office said the investigation continues into her disappearance and details about where she has been over the past several months have not been released.
The Hernandez family has requested privacy and told investigators that “Today we are the happiest people on earth.”
Amanda Smith, a family friend, held back tears minutes after she found out Hernandez is alive.
“I never ever let myself think that this day wouldn’t come. I’m just really happy that it’s here,” she said.
Officials would not talk on camera Monday about the investigation.
An FBI agent working on the case did say in a statement, “We’re just happy to see her home safe and sound, but we still want to understand how this came about and learn more about the circumstance.”
News of Hernandez’s return meant businesses like Sid’s Valley Food could take down posters about the missing teen that hung for months.
Sherry Samuel hopes some questions can be answered not that Hernandez has returned to her family.
“I want to know if — if it is safe up here. Did somebody take her away? Because it just feels nice to know that it didn’t happen here,” she said.
