Toronto : Suspect arrested in highway 400 hit-and-run

A 40-year-old Bradford man has been charged after an 82-year-old woman with Alzheimer’s was struck and killed on Highway 400 in Vaughan early Thursday.

The suspect turned himself in and his vehicle was seized, the OPP said.

Police say Chandrowci Basdeo, 82, was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and somehow got on the highway at King Road around 4 am on Thursday.

That’s when she was struck by a car in the south bound lanes. The grandmother from Vaughan died at the scene.

Police are not identifying the man they arrested but say he will face a charge of failing to stop at a scene of a motor vehicle collision involving death. He’s due in court Friday for a bail hearing.

The investigation is ongoing and police ask anyone with information to call Aurora OPP Const. Merek Ksenycz at 905-841-5777.
