A 24-year-old man is dead and another man was rushed to hospital after a shooting Monday evening in the west end of Toronto.
According to police, the victims were in a vehicle travelling southbound on Jane Street when they stopped at a red light in traffic just north of the intersection.
“A lone gunman approached from the rear of the vehicle and fired numerous rounds into the back in the driver’s side of the vehicle,” Toronto police Det.-Sgt. Hank Idsinga told reporters at the scene Monday night.
The 24-year-old driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. A 23-year-old passenger in the vehicle was also hit in the shooting. He is currently in hospital in serious condition.
Both victims are known to police, though only the passenger has a criminal history, Idsinga said.
Police said they believe the shooting was a targeted act.
“I don’t believe it’s a random act, I don’t believe it’s a road rage incident,” Idsinga said.
A number of witnesses are currently being interviewed. No suspect information has been provided by police.
Jane Street remains closed in both directions north of Eglinton Avenue as police investigate. The closure is expected to last a few more hours, Idsinga said.
