The medical director at Yorkville Endoscopy Center was fired following a throat procedure that led to the death of comedienne Joan Rivers, ABC News reported. Rivers died on Sept. 4 at the age of 81, one week after she was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital.
A number of US sources have reported that Dr Cohen spotted a growth on Rivers’ vocal cords.
The star’s own ear, nose and throat specialist had gone to the clinic with her but did not have permission to operate there.
There were claims in the States, denied by clinic bosses, that a biopsy was carried out on the star.
The state health department and the New York Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating.
Meanwhile, it has emerged Dr Cohen was unsuccessfully sued for medical malpractice a decade ago for allegedly operating on a 93-year-old without his informed consent.
