RCMP make direct appeal to Slocan standoff suspect

RCMP continue to search for Peter DeGroot and are urging residents to remain indoors, respect the restrictions, and to stay vigilant.

Last night, police issued a direct appeal to 45-year-old Peter DeGroot, asking him to surrender and talk to them to resolve the standoff peacefully.

Peter DeGroot is a suspect in an altercation that occurred in the southern interior community on Thursday.

Police were called about a dispute between two people, which resulted in an exchange of gunfire with officers.

No one was injured but residents have been advised to stay in their homes until DeGroot, who police consider armed and dangerous, is captured or turns himself in.

More than 40 officers are searching for him in the forests surrounding Slocan.

Neighbours describe DeGroot as a soft-spoken loner who loved his animals that included cows, pigs and chickens.
