A Massachusetts-based child rape suspect, who had been on a crime spree across the country, was arrested late Tuesday in New York state, police officials said Wednesday. Gregory Lewis, 26, was arrested near the Vermont border shortly before midnight.
A New York State Patrol trooper saw Lewis driving with a missing license plate on his vehicle, MSP said. The trooper attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver fled into Fort Edward Village. The trooper alerted other patrol units and together the officers began to search for the suspect vehicle.
Emergency dispatchers got a call from witnesses reporting that a vehicle had crashed into a river in Fort Edward. Police said Lewis got out of his sinking vehicle and brandished a gun at a witness who had heard the crash.
Police say Lewis had a gun, but no shots were fired when he was apprehended. Officials said the handgun matches the description of one Lewis is accused of stealing from a family member in September.
The vehicle Lewis was driving, while still underwater, appears to match the description of the blue Jeep Grand Cherokee Lewis has been believed to be driving during a spree of alleged rapes, kidnappings and robberies of female escorts in North Carolina, Colorado, and Oregon and an alleged armed robbery of an escort in Indianapolis, police said.
He is expected to be arraigned Wednesday on a fugitive charge.
Lewis was released on $1,000 bail after his arraignment Aug. 6 on charges including story rape of a child. He fled Sept. 15.
He’s suspected of crimes in several states while on the run, including Ohio, North Carolina, Colorado and Oregon.
